👋

With my roots in a small coastal town in England, I grew up surrounded by beautiful hills and lakes in Cumbria, writing stories about the many toys and animals that accompanied me on my adventures.

I studied for an extended diploma in Art & Design, where I learned that it's good to try new things and met some incredible people. In 2013 The Lakes International Comic Arts Festival presented me with a first-place award for a sketchy comic which in hindsight, wasn't as good as I thought, but was a huge stepping stone and the beginning of my path into illustration as a career.

Flying the nest at 18, I began studying for a BA Illustration degree at the University of Central Lancashire. Graduating after three long, exciting years in July 2017 I had achieved a high 2:1 with honours. Worth it!

I now work full-time in the UK for a children's book and toy company, primarily as a children's book illustrator though I often take on freelance work that dabbles in other areas, including EP cover design and Young Adult book cover illustration.

Scarlet State Blog has blossomed little-by-little over the past couple of years from a place where I  only discussed topics such as living well, cruelty free beauty and art but it is now an online haven for illustration, creativity, artist interviews and navigating the real world as an artist (plus a bunch of updates and ramblings by me)! So, you will stumble across a lot of older posts, but bear with me as new content is on the way.
